Project History
Detailed History:
September
1978
The Area Plan Commission of Tippecanoe County (MPO/ TCAPC) adopted their
Transportation Plan for the Greater Lafayette Area. The plan included
the proposed relocation of US 231, including a new bridge crossing for
the Wabash River.
1981
A Comprehensive Land Use Plan for Tippecanoe County was adopted.
1984
The City of West Lafayette, supported by the Tippecanoe County Commissioners
and the City of Lafayette, obtained an agreement with the Indiana Department
of Highways to proceed with the US 231 project.
1986
A proposed relocation of US 231, including a bridge crossing of the Wabash
River in the vicinity of South River Road, was included in the Transportation
Improvement Plan (TIP) of the TCAPC and the Indiana Department of Highways
Improvement Program (HIP). In addition, the 1981 Comprehensive Land Use
Plan for Tippecanoe County was updated by the TCAPC in December of 1986.
This update was in response to the announcement by the Subaru-Isuzu partnership
to build and operate a major automobile assembly plant in south Lafayette.
These events, coupled by the growth of the greater Lafayette area, further
stressed the importance of the US 231 Relocation Project.
1987
A Draft Environmental Impact
Statement (DEIS) was developed and approved for circulation.
June
1992
A Final Environmental Impact
Statement (FEIS) was developed and approved. The preferred alternative
identified in the FEIS was selected from the No-Build Alternative, the
Transportation Management System (TSM) Alternative and six Build Alternatives
on new location. The Preferred Alternative was required to satisfy five
project criteria.
September
1992
A Record of Decision (ROD)
was issued for the project.
June
2001
The southern portion of the project, including the new bridge crossing
of the Wabash River as well as improvements to South River Road were completed
and opened for traffic. The project segment between South River Road and
US 26 is undergoing final engineering design.
December
2001
An environmental document for the northern portion of the US 231 Relocation
Study is initiated. The purpose of the environmental document is to determine
whether there are significant impacts associated with the project. The
findings of the environmental document will determine whether or not a
Supplement Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) will be required for
this final portion of the US 231 Relocation Project. Website launched.
